Some people build a career. Others seem to build a profession around them. For more than 30 years, James Allen has done exactly that, making a significant contribution to rural consultancy, agribusiness leadership, governance, and the development of the next generation of rural professionals.
A graduate of Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture, James began his professional career in 1996 as an Agricultural Consultant. In his early years, he developed expertise across farm management, business planning and agricultural extension, while also completing a Certificate in Adult Teaching and the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme. Along the way, he twice reached the Grand Final of the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year Contest, proving his ability to communicate and lead.
Just 6 years into his career, James took the bold step of becoming a founding partner of AgFirst Waikato. That entrepreneurial leap helped shape what has become one of NewZealand's most respected rural consulting businesses. He later played key roles in establishing AgFirst Taranaki, the Manawatu arm, and served as a Director and Chairman of AgFirst New Zealand. Today he leads the organisation as CEO.
Throughout his career, James has combined practical farm advisory work with a commitment to lifelong learning and thought leadership. He completed a Master of Agribusiness, has undertaken international study and research, led major extension and mentoring programmes, and developed expertise in farm systems, nutrient management, governance and business transition. His work has taken him from South Waikato to Uruguay; Ireland to Rwanda; and Chile to Vanuatu; bringing global insights back to benefit New Zealand farmers and rural businesses.
Service has been a constant theme. James served as National President of New Zealand Young Farmers, President of NZIPIM, President of the National Fieldays Society, and Associate Director of AGMARDT. He has also been a passionate advocate for professional standards through his long-standing involvement with certification and advisory programmes.
In more recent years, James was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship, researching artificial intelligence and the future of agricultural advisory services.
Yet despite the impressive list of achievements, I know James points to different highlights: raising three farming-mad sons, supporting Kerry's remarkable work growing Agribusiness in Schools, helping develop the next generation of advisers, and playing a part in pushing our primary sector forward.
James has never been short on ideas, projects, committees or air miles, but throughout it all he has remained grounded, practical and deeply committed to people.
James, in recognition of your outstanding service, leadership and contribution to the rural profession and to our Institute, it gives us great pleasure to award you - Life Member if the Institute of Rural Professionals
