Together with x,y,z we have been working on a management plan and modelling the economics to use pines as a nurse crop to establish natives. In the paper attached we have been able to provide a summary of findings as well as an indicative comparison is provided with planting natives, pines as production forestry, and sheep and beef farming.
The government is currently consulting on a number of changes to the ETS (including transitional forestry) and has a research program underway to review the yield tables used to determine sequestration of natives (currently based on Manuka/Kanuka dominated scrub). This project is based on on current legislation as at August 2023.
The idea of the project is to test using pines as a nurse crop to establish native bush, this will enable
1. A lower cost entry into forestry
2. An immediate revenue stream through the ETS
3. Lower inputs post planting in terms of weed control (pines are faster to establish and outcompete grasses)
