AgFirst’s Lochie MacGillivray, is involved in leading the Catch Crop Sediment Mitigation Group.
The Catch Crop Sediment Mitigation Group aim to:
- Prove the hypothesis that using catch crop technology will reduce sediment losses after the winter grazing of hill country forage crops
- Maximise the uptake of catch crop technology and best practice cropping techniques
- Aid farm profitability
The project is run by a team of rural specialists and scientists from across New Zealand. The research they are undertaking is focusing on the environmental and economic benefits of catch crops. A range of crop species and establishment techniques that have the ability to reduce sediment and surface flow losses following winter grazing of forage crops are being evaluated.
