John Bealing

Engineering Consultant

John has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, specialising in soils and engineering. Since leaving the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1995, John’s areas of work, include project work such as:

  • Kaiteriteri Urban Water Scheme for the Tasman District Council ($1.8 m). Winery wastewater schemes for many of the larger wineries in Marlborough (including Corbans Wines, Rapaura Vintners, Selak’s, Nobilo’s, Allan Scott Wines, Villa Maria, Delegats, Cloudy Bay, etc.)
  • Industry wastewater schemes [including Talley’s Vegetable factory in Marlborough, Sadd’s Piggery (6,000 pig equivalents), Tasman Milk Products Brightwater factory], and Frucor Processing (NZAPMB).
  • Involved with the Focus Orchard Irrigation Water Studies carried out for about 5 years (from 1998), and funded by SFF.
  • Involvement with the Buller River and the Motueka River Conservation Orders. Operating a Neutron Probe irrigation management service in the district for more than a decade.
  • Co-author of the “Tasman Regional Water Study”, prepared for the Tasman Regional Water Augmentation Committee, August 2003.
  • Resource management applications, and environmental impact reports (mostly related to soil and water issues).

Most of the above work involved data collection, liaison with the client, design and material specifications, costing, and in many cases the organisation of tenders, and the supervision of the installation and commissioning of the total scheme.

Some of the community type projects have involved negotiations with the local Iwi (indigenous peoples), archaeologists and the NZ Historic Places Trust.

Annual Environmental Compliance

Currently involving 8 Marlborough wineries including Nobilo Dryland Estate, Villa Maria, Forest Hill, Nautilus, and Highfield, John wears multiple hats on this project as engineer/designer, monitoring officer, inspector and compliance reporter. Having originally designed and obtained resource consent for the winery waste water system, John now visits and inspects annually for compliance, monitors soils, carries out wastewater analysis, volumes produced, etc, and writes an annual report to Council.

Kaiteriteri Community Water Supply

Working closely with the Tasman District Council engineering staff, John acted as design engineer and scheme consultant on the Kaiteriteri Community Water Supply Project. The project involved working on establishing the options available, presenting these to ratepayers, writing contracts and overseeing installation of the $1.8 million scheme on time and within budget.
