Carla’s degrees in both horticultural science and finance give her an ideal background to pursue one of her specialties – economic benchmarking. Carla is instrumental in major industry benchmarking projects including MAF farm monitoring for both pipfruit and viticulture, and the Pipfruit NZ statistics annual.
Her other passion, viticulture, brings a new facet to the team of AgFirst consultants, and Carla has been welcomed by the wine industry, acting as Regional Co-Ordinator for the MAF SFF/NZ Winegrower’s three year Focus Vineyard Project.
Carla also works on a one-to-one level with growers, for example, in the area of individual property evaluations and property development, identifying the most profitable pathways for growers.
Carla offers a full range of services to viticultural growers, including:
- property evaluations and purchase feasibilities
- financial planning and monitoring
- economic benchmarking on both a block and vineyard level
- technical and financial advice
- property supervision
- project management
- technology transfer and education
Carla works closely with our research and technical teams, assisting with monitoring services, statistical analysis and financial benchmarking.
Keen to pass on the passion, Carla also teaches units of the National Certificate in Viticulture (Level 4 - advanced).

Projects and Services
NZ Winegrowers/MAFF SFF Focus Vineyard Project
A three year project to identify best practice and improve adoption within the viticultural industry, with a particular focus on sustainability.
MAF Farm Monitoring
Each year the MAF Policy monitors the production and financial status of farms and orchards. These models are the basis of MAF Policy’s series of short-term financial and physical forecasts for agriculture sectors and regions within New Zealand.
NZ Pipfruit National Crop Estimate and Statistics Annual
Each year Ross and the team collate a huge amount of data to put together these two reports. Historically the crop estimate has been accurate to 4%. The Statistics Annual is becoming a key piece of industry infrastructure.
